Harvard University Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA

Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard is an Ivy League university with an acceptance rate of just 5%. If youre considering applying to this exceptionally selective school, here are the Harvard Admissions statistics you should know including average SAT/ACT scores and GPAs of admitted students. Harvard accepts the Common Application, Coalition Application, and Universal College Application. Why Harvard University? Acceptance Rate Harvard is one of the most selective universities in the country with an acceptance rate of 5% for students who entered during the 2017-18 academic year. For every 5 students who got in, 95 received rejection letters. Admissions Statistics (2017-18) Number of Applicants 42,749 Percent Admitted 5% Percent Admitted Who Enrolled 82% SAT Scores and Requirements Harvard University, like all of the Ivy League Schools, requires all applicants to submit SAT or ACT scores. For students who entered the university in the 2017-18 academic year, 67% of applicants submitted SAT scores. If you compare SAT scores for the eight Ivy League schools, youll see that all are looking for scores that are far above average, but Harvard and Yale have the highest scores of the group. On the evidence-based reading section of the exam, 25% of applicants scored a 720 or lower, while the top 25% all scored between 780 and 800. Math scores were even higher, with all students in the top quartile scoring a perfect 800. To be truly competitive at Harvard, youll want to have a combined SAT score that is well above 1400. Requirements Harvard University requires students to take the optional essay exam with the SAT. The essay is used for admissions, advising, and class placement. The university also highly recommends that all applicants take at least two SAT Subject Tests. Harvard does not superscore the SAT for applicants who have taken the exam multiple times, but the university does take note of the highest scores for each section. ACT Scores and Requirements All Harvard applicants must submit scores from either the SAT or ACT, and some applicants submit scores from both exams. The SAT is the slightly more popular exam, but over half of applicants (53%) submitted ACT scores. According to national ACT data, most successful Harvard applicants have scores in the top 3% of all test-takers. A look at ACT data for the entire Ivy League shows that youd better have a composite score of 30 or better to be at all competitive. Among Harvard applicants, 25% scored a 33 or lower on the ACT, while the top 25% all scored either a 35 or 36. Requirements Harvard applicants need to take the ACT with writing, and the score on the essay is used for admissions, advising, and placement. The university also highly recommends that all applicants, including those who take the ACT, submit scores from at least two SAT Subject Tests. Note that Harvard does not superscore the ACT—the admissions folks will look at your highest score from a single test date. GPA and Class Rank For new first-year students who entered Harvard University in the 2017-18, the average high school GPA was 4.18. 93% of all enrolled students had a GPA of 3.75 or higher, and no students were admitted who had a GPA below a 3.0. Class ranks were also high with 95% of all enrolled students having been in the top 10% of their high school class. 99% were in the top 25%, and no students were in the bottom half of their class. Admissions Chances In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. The density of data points in the upper right corner is extremely high, so typical scores for admitted students are higher than they might appear at first glance. Also, realize that theres a lot of red hidden beneath the blue and green in the upper right corner of the graph. Many students with perfect GPAs and test scores in the top 1 percent still get rejected from Harvard. Even the most qualified students should consider Harvard a  reach school. Dont be misled by the data points in the graph that seem to represent mediocre grades and standardized test scores. Many of these data points can be explained by Harvards large international applicant pool. Non-native speakers will, understandably, often have standardized test scores on the English language sections that arent perfect. Also, many foreign countries have entirely different grading standards than the U.S., and a C average in one country might be the equivalent of an A in some U.S. schools. If you are from the U.S., dont give up hope of getting into Harvard if you dont have a 4.0 GPA and 1600 on the SAT. Harvard has  holistic admissions, and the university is looking for students who bring to campus more than good grades and test scores. Students who have some kind of remarkable talent or have a compelling story to tell will get a close look even if grades and test scores arent quite up to the ideal. According to the  Harvard admissions website, the school looks for strong personal qualities, special talents or excellences of all kinds, perspectives formed by unusual personal circumstances, and the ability to take advantage of available resources and opportunities. Thus, while Harvard will certainly want to see a strong academic record punctuated by success in AP, IB, Honors, and/or dual enrollment classes, they are also looking for students who bring more than studiousness to the campus community. Make sure your application clearly highlights what it is that distinguishes you from your peers. True depth and accomplishment in your  extracurricular activities  can play a significant role in your application. Also, make sure you use your  essays  to showcase your personality and passions. Finally, make sure you ask the proper people to write  letters of recommendation: the right words from a teacher who knows you well can provide a useful perspective for the admissions folks. Research argues that health promoting lifestyle activities maintain or improve individual’s health and wellness (reference). Researchers suggest that health promotion includes a process of empowerment of the community to act on the improvement of their life and health qualities (research) A closer look into a healthy lifestyle begins at childhood. Noting Social Networking Trends Free Essays

The research question that was partially answered by my mini-research is two-fold. I concerned myself by asking first, what social networking sites (if any) were used by family members and peers. Secondly, if usage of these sites was confirmed, I asked the purpose for the use of these various social tools. We will write a custom essay sample on Noting Social Networking Trends or any similar topic only for you Order Now Since, these sites are so popular, I wanted to know if there was a difference in age, gender, or any other demographic information that would make usage vary in the sample population. I interviewed 22 people and out of those 22, 18 of them reported using some type of social networking sites. The four that did not use them claimed that they very rarely, if ever used the internet or that they had no need for these tools. Two of these respondents were over 50, but two were relatively young, white, blue-collar types. Of the 18 that did report using social networking sites, 5 of them admitted to having an account, but infrequently or never visiting the sites or utilizing them in any way. There was no common demographic in these five, the only commonality was a response of â€Å"being too busy† or staying connected with others through other means, such as texting or â€Å"hanging out†. This leaves 13 respondents that admitted to regular using and utilizing social networking sites. Out of these 13, the ages of users ranged from 14 to 47. Both males and females were represented almost equally. Ethnically speaking, more whites than blacks were left at this stage in the sample, making whites seem slightly over represented. Many sites were reported as being used and many reasons were given for using them. Of both younger men and women (aged 14-26 and 9 members in this subgroup) â€Å"MySpace† was cited as being the most used site with most of the respondents reporting that they used this site everyday â€Å"to stay in contact with friends†. Of this same age group, more men than women, also, reported using both â€Å"Imeem† and â€Å"Buzznet† to listen to music and/or to find new artists with â€Å"Imeem† being more popular than â€Å"Buzznet† (with only 2 of 6 using â€Å"Buzznet†). The remaining 4 respondents were all Caucasian women from the ages of 33-47. â€Å"Facebook† was popular with all 4 for â€Å"staying connected with old friends and/or networking†. â€Å"Myspace† was unpopular with all and cited by one respondent as being â€Å"made for teens†. â€Å"Going† and â€Å"LinkedIn† were also popular with â€Å"LinkedIn† being popular with 3 and â€Å"Going† with 2. â€Å"LinkedIn† was said to be popular for business purposes and â€Å"Going† was considered a popular way to find events and parties in the surrounding areas. This research begins to answer the two-part question, but further research and a larger group to sample may answer the question fully. These demographics were pretty universal in the popularity and reasoning for using the sites and further study could help advertisers learn how to more specifically target the demographics in and outside these sites. Mercent of Venice Essay Study Questions Essay Topics Study Questions 1. Discuss Shylock’s dramatic function in The Merchant of Venice. What do critics mean when they suggest that Shylock is â€Å"too large† for the play? Does he fulfill or exceed his role? Model Answer – In order to ensure that we understand Shylock as a threat to the happiness of Venice’s citizens and lovers, Shakespeare uses a number of dramatic devices to amplify Shylock’s villainy. In doing so, however, he creates a character so compelling that many feel Shylock comes to dominate the play, thereby making him â€Å"too large. Certainly, Shylock is a masterful creation. At his cruelest, he is terrifying, even more so because all of his schemes exist within the framework of the law. Seen in this light, Shylock becomes a kind of bogeyman, turning Venetian society’s own institutions on themselves. On the other hand, Shylock is also pitiable, even sympathetic, at times. He has been harshly handled b y Venetian society and has seen his daughter elope with one of the same men who despise him. His passionate monologue in Act III, scene i reveals that he feels the same emotions as his opponents, and we cannot help but see him as a man. In fact, Shylock’s character is so well-rounded and intricate that many see him as the only interesting figure in a play that is not, in theory, supposed to center about him. Shylock’s scenes are gripping and fascinating, and many critics believe the play deflates every time he makes an exit. 2. In the end, how comic is The Merchant of Venice? Does the final act succeed in restoring comedy to the play? Model Answer – The Merchant of Venice contains all of the elements required of a Shakespearean comedy, but is often so overshadowed by the character of Shylock and his quest for a pound of flesh that it is hard not to find in the play a generous share of the tragic as well. Lovers pine and are reunited, a foolish servant makes endless series of puns, and genteel women masquerade as men—all of which are defining marks of Shakespearean comedy. In sharp contrast to these elements, however, Shakespeare also presents Shylock, a degraded old man who has lost his daughter and is consumed with a bloody greed. The light language of the play’s comedic moments disappears for whole scenes at a time, and Antonio’s fate is more suspenseful than funny. The final act redeems the play’s claims to be a comedy, piling on the necessary humor and serendipity, but the rest of the play is overcast by the fact that Antonio may soon pay Bassanio’s debt with his life. 3. Discuss the relationship between Jessica and Shylock. Are we meant to sympathize with the moneylender’s daughter? Does Shakespeare seem ambivalent in his portrayal of Jessica? Model Answer – In looking at the relationship between Jessica and Shylock, we are again forced to walk a fine line between sympathizing with and despising Shylock. For all intents and purposes, the play should label Shylock’s mistreatment by his own daughter as richly deserved. After all, he is spiteful, petty, and mean, and in his more cartoonish or evil moments, it is hard to imagine why Jessica should stay. At other times, however, Jessica’s escape seems like another cruel circumstance inflicted on Shylock, and her behavior offstage borders on heartless. Shylock is never more sympathetic than when he bemoans the fact that Jessica has taken a ring given to him in his bachelor days by his wife and has traded it for a monkey, the most banal of objects. Nor is Jessica ever able to produce satisfactory evidence that life in her father’s house is miserable. Her seeming indifference to Antonio’s fate—she and Lorenzo are more interested in the price of bacon—makes us wonder whether Jessica is actually more selfish and self-absorbed than the father she condemns. While Shylock is no saint, his resolve to collect his debt only seems to strengthen beyond reason after he discovers that Jessica has fled. Strategies To Resolve The Principal Agent Problem Accounting EssayLater in Scene 1 Bassanio’s speech about Portia reveals his feelings for her (LOVE THEME) but it also tells us as an audience what to expect when the lady herself appears in the next scene.
